Catapulting Through Time

Our project consists of a historical, theoretical, and experimental component. The historical component explores the evolution of non-gunpowder projectile-launching weapons through time, showcasing several distinct designs. The theoretical component presents a mathematical model for approximating the range of a trebuchet in conditions of perfect energy retention. The experimental component consisted of constructing a physical trebuchet. We then used it to determine the increase in its range and thus energy efficiency after installing two mechanical upgrades: a swinging (versus fixed) counterweight and a sliding (versus fixed) frame. These upgrades reflect similar design features of historical siege engines.
