Wi-Fi networks utilize the IEEE 802.11 protocol, which uses the 2.4GHz radio band. This radio band is used by many devices, including Bluetooth and microwave ovens. Whereas 802.11 devices will only transmit when necessary, microwaves and Bluetooth do not comply with the same protocol and will interfere with signals across the network. Moreover, radio waves suffer from path loss such that greater distances will reduce the strength of a signal. This project studies the deterioration of Wi-Fi networks at varying distances and when the signal was interfered with.
