Bending the Cytoskeleton

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of extracellular pH on the cytoskeleton in Paramecium Caudatum. It used a combination of cell shape after the pH is modified and the cell shape after hydrostatic pressure created by centrifuge as indirect observations to the strength of the cytoskeleton. The pH is expected to affect the strength of the cytoskeleton in a positive linear relationship. The phenomenon can be explained by the pH dependency of Cofilin. When only the physiological range is considered, a positive linear relationship can be observed between the pH value and the relative strength of the cytoskeleton.
