To invent our oil spill containment blanket, we first needed to find several fabrics which absorb oil yet will also repel water. By having four trays filled with oil, freshwater, saltwater contaminated with oil, and freshwater contaminated with oil, we conducted absorption experiments to find the top three most oil absorbent and water repellent fabrics. Acetate, polyester fleece, and polyester suede produced the best results. Combined together, these three fabrics absorbed a large amount of oil, all the while absorbing the least amount of water.
